Travel Guide - Hawaii: On a Budget
As one of the top vacation destinations in the United States, Hawaii is also known as one of the most expensive. Not only are the plane tickets to get to the islands expensive, but the price of almost everything is more in the state because much of it is shipped in from the mainland.
Even so, there are still some things that you can do to help you save on your budget while still getting the most out of the Aloha State. Here are our favorite tips for visiting Hawaii on a budget!
Stay on One Island
While it is true that if you want to get the most out of a trip to Hawaii, you should island hop, the costs can add up. This is because you typically have to take an airplane to get across the ocean to the other island. Instead, if you want to save as much money as possible, do your research and choose the island that will let you do everything you want to do. Typically, most people have a full experience on any of the bigger islands like The Big Island or Oahu, but it’s all up to you!
Eat at Home
Another tip that works anywhere in the world is to make your own meals. While you still don’t want to miss your chance to eat authentic Hawaiian food at any of the popular restaurants, you can still recreate the experience in your own kitchen. Go to one of the local markets, and you’ll have your pick of fresh seafood and fruits grown right on the island.
Stick to the Beach
The hundreds of beaches across the states are the main attractions for many visitors. Want to know the best part about these beaches? Most are free to access! So, if you’re going to cut costs but still have an authentic and enjoyable Hawaiian experience, lounge on the beach as much as possible, and you won’t spend a dime!
Go on a Hike
While you might picture expensive cocktails in Tiki glasses when you think of Hawaii, the islands offer spectacular natural views that you can’t find anywhere else in the United States. Most of these hikes are either free, or the entry fee is only a couple of dollars. Even so, it’s a great way to enjoy the fresh air, explore the island’s natural surroundings and save while you travel Hawaii on a budget.
Use Public Transport
Renting a car can get expensive, and the gas prices in Hawaii aren’t known for being a bargain. So, even though you might choose to rent a car when you get there, don’t let that stop you from taking public transportation while in Hawaii. Especially if you decide to stay in a city like Honolulu, you’ll be able to get anywhere that you need to be at a relatively affordable price.
Save on Souvenir Shopping
The ABC Stores in Hawaii are world famous for offering practically everything at a decently affordable price. There are hundreds of them across the state, and you’ll be able to find gifts for friends and family back home without having to bust the bank.
